Biography
She studied classical piano at Senzoku Gakuen Junior College before beginning her professional career as a commercial jingle singer in her hometown of Shizuoka. Alongside her early performing work, she hosted the NHK Shizuoka FM radio program “Ima wa no Toki” for two years, gaining recognition as both a singer and media personality.
In 1991, Nakayama relocated to Tokyo, where she began performing regularly at live venues and prestigious hotel lounges, including the Imperial Hotel Tokyo and the Hyatt Regency. Over the years, she has built a rich repertoire covering jazz standards, Brazilian bossa nova, and international pop classics.
In 2000, she released her debut album “Stories of Love,” showcasing her lyrical interpretations and expressive range. Her unique vocal style reflects not only her deep love of jazz and bossa nova but also a sensitivity to the aesthetics of traditional Japanese music, giving her performances a distinctive cultural resonance.
Celebrated for the clarity and warmth of her voice, Nakayama has captivated audiences across generations. In recent years, she has turned her focus to interpreting Japanese songs through a contemporary lens, earning critical acclaim for her heartfelt delivery.
In August 2012, she released her second album “Gift,” further establishing her as an artist who bridges Japanese tradition with global musical expression.
